Pottery photos - Valerie Jean

These are some photos I took for Valerie Jean, you may remember me photographing her work from late last year. These images are for a grant application, and although it was a little rushed getting them done, I put no less attention and care into making them. I'm happy to see comparing these to my older images I did for her, a big step in lighting control on my part. This is extremely compelling work that she makes, hope you enjoy it.

I also tried some different things, like the view going inside the bowel. Wish I had thought to do close ups of the masks though.

New Art Documentation

This is some sculpture and pottery I shot for Melissa LeBlanc the other day. I was really excited to try my hand at shooting the sculpture and I'm very pleased with the result. I used a single top down, left sided flash head with a couple reflectors in place to bounce the light back up. This method was suggested to me by Drew Gilbert, an instructor here at NBCCD. For the pots I kept the overhead light but made it more central and added in a left facing soft box. I wish now I had another reflector in place on the right side, as the bottom right side on the images is a little too dark by my standards, a reshoot may be in order if Melissa wants it. I could just be being picky though. On to the images.

Till next time.

Publication News

Hey all, just more or less making a log about this. One of my photos from "It All Starts With Clay" was published in the February 23-29, 2012(Volume 13, Issue 8) issue of HERE in the Arts section. Pretty good of them to promote the show.

Gallery Opening At NBCCD - It All Begins With Clay

These are shots I took at the opening of the pottery exhibit "It All Begins With Clay" at the NBCCD Gallery. Used my standard location lighting setup that I showcased in my tutorial video.

Also I had the honour of constructing the lighting design for this show and I'm very happy with my results, I think it showcased the work very nicely. I hope I have the opportunity to do this more in the future.

Artist Head Shots

This is a collection of low key head shots I did for NBCCD for the production of artist bio cards. It features a group of select Ceramics and Metals students. Not much to say about the technics, I used a three light setup, one main soft box, an upward directional light and a downward hair light attached to the ceiling. I used a modified version of this setup with an extra light to do a documentation shoot of some textiles work, which will be my next update.

The images may be better presented in black and white, but I'm leaving that choice to the graphic designers making the cards.
