Huge Pottery Shoot

This is work for a huge pottery shoot I did last week. Featured is the work of Valerie Jean. I was able to use my new 60mm Macro lens on this job and was very happy I could do incredible detail shots, which is exactly what she was after. There's a tonne of photos that aren't going on the website due to space, but I would like to share most of the entire collection on here, as not only is it awesome work, I don't believe there anything I wouldn't want people to see from this shoot.

New Creative Portrait Work

Another successful shoot in my creative portrait style. These images feature the wonderful Sarah Rennick. I thought I would go over a typical editing session this time, just so that you can all get an idea a bit of the work beyond the shoot.

On a typical portrait shoot I end up with anywhere from 80 to 150 images after roughly an hour of shooting. I start by going through them and picking which ones I like the best, I then mark them by adding a crop to the image in Lightroom. This gives me an idea of what to focus on in the image and how to frame the shot. After I do my first sweep of the photos I pick one and do the colour and lighting adjustments and then sync the rest, typically this finishes that stage for all the photos, as I rarely change setup during the shoot. I then go back through my selected images and pick out roughly 10 to 20 images and export them to Photoshop as .tiff images. I then edit down to 5, these will be the shots for the website and what I consider the best of the lot. I then clean up the marks and dirt on the backdrop and save the final image. Of course this in no way means the others were bad images, here are the rest of the top ten :

Really it just comes down to what I personally like, but I always prepare the other top picks just in case the model likes one of them better.

Outdoor Location Shots

Here are the outdoor shots I promised before. My model, Hilary Lindsay, did a wonderful looking great which helps to make great photos. I had a little bit a technical problem with my second flash unit and as such it didn't fire in any of the shots I picked to be the best ones, too bad, maybe next time. Still I'm quite happy with the outcome, thanks Hilary.

Some New Creative Portrait Work

I know I said this would be outside shots, but that model has yet to release the photos to me, so instead I'm going to post some images from the shoot I had today with the wonderful Natasha Sushkerich. There are slightly more of the creative shots on here because I have set a limit of 5 shots per model session on my website. It forces me to pick the best of the best and show off a little, however on here I can go a little more in depth. Here are the shots on the website.

Though I really like these, I decided to stick with images that you can really see the face on for the website. Speaking of the eyes, I started lightening them a little in Lightroom to give them that extra pop and make them stand out. I love that what used to be hours for work in the darkroom can now be done in a few seconds with these programs. Great shoot all around, I've been very lucky finding models this year, putting up signs has been a great investment so far. Thanks to Natasha and everyone that has modelled so far, hopefully the ball keeps rolling uphill!

Studio Shots Round Three

Once again continuing on with my creative lighting studio work, today's subject, Hilary Nguyen, an FVA student here at NBCCD. I used two background lights this time to try and an interesting grade to the white backdrop. The colours nicely merged in the middle and I'm very happy with the results. Thanks again Hilary you were a great model, a real natural.

Next update I'll hopefully have images up from my outdoor shoot from earlier in the day from this shoot, just waiting for the models approval on them. I'll close off with one more shot of Hilary I did with just the white background, even though it was for an assignment I still thought I'd share cause it's really nice.

Happy 90th Birthday! Jean Holder - My Grandmother

For something a little lighter, here are some pictures I took at my grandmothers birthday party on November 4th.
